Trey Gores and Jayden Smith are Baptized! 2-24-2018

Tonight was a very special evening! Trey Gores and Jayden Smith, two of the three grandchildren that are now living with Lu Ann Sims were baptized. Trey is 14 and Jayden is 9.  Arayah, their sister is 11, but has chosen not to be baptized at this time. Lu Ann has only been active since September since she saw the notice in the newspaper that President and Sister Stratford were coming to speak in our branch. Lu Ann is raising her three grandchildren.
Sisters Hall and Humpherys began teaching them about two months ago and tonight was their big night! The boys had helped plan the whole program, they chose the music, the speakers, who would baptize and confirm them and the videos that would be shown after the baptism while the fellows were getting dressed. Bob Cushman,  Lu Ann’s boyfriend even consented to sing “I Stand All Amazed”!
They were so excited and well prepared.  Our sisters did a great job teaching them. President and Sister Stratford came, as well as President Birch, which made it even more special for them. Also Sister Pead and Sister Taylor (who had been in a car accident the previous week) were able to come and even spoke when Brother Love got sick and was unable to give the talk on baptism and holy Ghost.
Lu Ann’s ex-husband and their son and grandson came from Millersburg and it was great to meet them! Elder Blanchard baptized Trey and Elder Kimball, the District Leader performed Jayden’s baptism and his companion was the witness.
About 20 people came and we had nice refreshments.
There was a very sweet spirit in the room tonight! We are so proud of these young men! They will be a great asset to our branch!
Congratulations again to Trey and Jayden!

Valentine Institute Class and Dinner - Love Stories in the Scriptures 2-14-2018

Since Valentine’s Day fell on a Wednesday this year, we decided to host a special edition of our Institute Class – and call it Love Stories in the ScripturesWe also decided to have a dinner!  Many of our branch members are single so thought that this might be a nice way of celebrating Valentines Day for them. We heard from everyone: members, non-members, investigators, yes we are coming, and so planned food for about 30 people!
We decorated, prepared lasagna, garlic bread, green beans and salad with a yummy cheesecake bar at the end of the lesson.
We ended up having 17 come with several people who came for the first time, so that was great.  We had dinner, a special lesson about the greatest love story in the scriptures, the Love the Savior shows us and asks us to show to one another. John 13: 34 & 35, and Paul even had a sing along with his guitar for us to sing “As I Have Loved You”. The Lyrics: As I have loved you, Love one another. This new commandment: Love one another. By this shall men know Ye are my disciples, If ye have love One to another.”
Our invitation to act was to do something for someone you love from our discussion about several New Testament love stories.

We love these folks and had a very nice evening!

Elisabeth #6 Birthday Date, South Africa Slides, Lehmans, Valentines Cookies, Wrestling and a Chocolate Extravaganza!

This has been a fun week! Last Friday we got up early and headed to North Carolina. We had made arrangements with Ryan to have a birthday date with Elisabeth- her first one ever!  This is one of the blessings of being called to serve in Ohio! Where she used to be 2,000 miles away, she is now only 450 miles away! We have never been able to have a birthday date with her, so we appreciated Ryan and Lea sharing their birthday weekend with Elisabeth with us.  We picked Katie and Elisabeth up in Christiansburg and had a fun ride to Huntersville. We arrived in time for a yummy birthday dinner with a Moana birthday cake and opened presents. We played and then the next morning took Elisabeth to breakfast (chocolate chip pancakes) and then to a very fun Children’s museum, where we played until noon.  After a fun lunch, we left the celebration and headed back to Ohio.  Driving 900 miles  in 30 hours for a birthday date with Elisabeth was worth everything! Such a fun day!
We had so much snow the next day that church was cancelled, and so we spent the day catching up on studying, reading, writing and our missionary planning. Paul even had to shovel a little path for his squirrels to their feeder, he is such a softie!
This has been a very snowy winter, one of the coldest, iciest and snowiest for several years.  So grateful for a warm home, warm car and warm clothes!
The sad thing is that church has been cancelled twice and we also cancelled institute this week.  The missionary Sisters and we invite people to church and then it is cancelled, it makes it kind of hard on the missionary work!  But they are planning on baptizing LuAnne Sims three grandchildren in two weeks, which is very fun!

The previous week we did have a fabulous lesson on the Prodigal Son and what we can learn from both sons and the father.  We even had a mock family council with our class to see what we could do to help the Prodigal Son's family!
Monday night we hosted our monthly Empty Nester Family Home Evening and after our lesson by Sister Rain Smith, we showed Paul’s slides of his missionary safari in Africa, and again a big hit! We love those pictures! Warm peach cobbler topped off the evening!
We went to Lehman’s store, in Amish country, which is on our bucket list this week after making a trip to the Social Security office to get some documentation for our taxes.  It is a bit of a challenge to live so far away from Utah and our accountant, but we got everything we needed and had a fun visit to a very famous Ohio store!
We invited Heather Page’s children in this week for dinner, valentine cookie making and the sisters taught them a lesson on the Priesthood. It was a fun evening!
We continue to host lots of missionary discussions and meals in our home, which is very enjoyable.  The sisters do not tract, they only teach, and often they  bring their investigators here to be taught, or we go with them.  They are very busy! We also are helping Tom, a new member prepare family history names to take to the temple next week!
We also learned that Devin Klein won the coach of the year award in wrestling, and we took him a little congratulation treat! He then invited us to come to senior night at the high school and watch a meet that he coached and then see the seniors as they received their awards, one of which was Danita's boy Braiden. Chip and Terri, Ryan, Devin and Lindy and their kids, Danita, Braiden and Katie were all there!  It is always very special time when we get to visit with any of the Klein family, they are such wonderful people!
And President and Becky went with us, which was the best!
We volunteer in the community in as many ways that we can! On Saturday, The Pomerene Center for the arts was hosting their 26th annual chocolate extravaganza and we asked if we might be of help. Paul was the greeter and Kim got to serve. What a blast helping serve the most amazing chocolate desserts donated by many many fabulous cooks for about 3 hours to hundreds of people! People would buy a ticket and get to choose one  slice of the assortment of incredible cheesecakes,  one slice of the many cakes and three other smaller dessert.  They were all amazing! Works of art!
We got to meet lots of new people and see many of the friends we have already made!
With our purchases (and another bunch donated to us by our neighbor) we delivered yummy treats to many of our community neighbors and friends!
What a delicious way to do missionary work!

The Coshocton Tribune Features the Sisters - Front Page! 1-31-2018

Sister Hall and Sister Humpherys made the front page of the Coshocton Tribune today! Wow!  The reporter and photographer had come to the church to interview all of the missionaries, which they did, but it was certainly geared toward these cute young ladies! They did super!
This is the second article in the Coshocton newspapers that have featured them. Several weeks ago they were featured in the Beacon. We could not buy front page advertising if we wanted, but here they are!
What a blessing for them/us, as they go about working and serving in the community, people have seen their faces and recognize the work that they do!

Making Many More Missionary Memories! January 28, 2018

We have been busy!  With the onset of winter weather, we thought that things might slow down, but we just keep having new and different missionary experiences!
We had a wonderful zone conference where our young missionaries were issued smart phones and trained on how to use them for their missionary work.  Lots of guidelines but so many opportunities for sharing the gospel!
We had 2 great institute lessons these past two weeks 1) on the price of discipleship and 2) things lost and found: coins, sheep and sons.  We love teaching in the Savior’s way and learn so much from these wonderful members of our branch! We have several non-members attend and that brings a wonderful perspective to our learning together!
We used to call the learning format “Share Learn Live and now we have followed the new RS and Priesthood direction of “Share Learn and Act”.
We got to attend the temple and even took a family name that was suggested to us on Family Search!  Yea for Family Search!
We have had many lessons with the sister missionaries over these past weeks.  They often teach in our home and that is fun to help them teach some of the lesson and bear our testimonies. We also provide the treats or dinner and it makes for a nice hour.  They are so obedient, one hour for a meal and one hour for a lesson, and then they are off again to teach another discussion. They are teaching all the time!
When schedule permits, Sister Blanchard continues to serve at the Thursday community meals at the various churches in Coshocton throughout the month.  This past week, the second Thursday, was at the Grade Methodist Church and they are getting to know her there, she loves these wonderful groups of people!
When people in the community saw Sisters Hall and Humpherys article in the Beacon, the local free newspaper, the sisters got a phone call asking Sister Hall (BYU tennis player) to play with a group of women for a few weeks at Kids America, our local gym while one of their team members was out of the country.  And then Sister Humpheries (U of SF soccer player) was asked to help coach a youth league on Monday evenings.  After getting permission from our mission president, they went to both last week, and it was great exposure for the church, and the sisters were fabulous! Typically missionaries are not allowed to go to gyms.
A really fun thing is that Dustin Klein, one of our favorite people that we have met here in Coshocton  (and his family)  who works for Hathaway construction has invited us to watch a project he is doing. He and his team are just finishing up adding a planetarium to the high school.  Dustin has invited us up multiple times to watch the progress while they have been doing the remodel of the high school and installation of the planetarium equipment.  He has done a marvelous job and it has been fun to see the progress.  Plus we have been able to have some great discussions with him about his family. This past week the project was finished and he texted us to come and see the final product, and it is incredible!  We even got to see part of one of the shows, it is totally Imax quality! They will open it up for public shows probably this summer.
Dustin and Amanda also invited us to watch their daughters’ dance at the local high school basketball game half time performances.  That has been a very fun thing and we went two weeks, once with the sister missionaries and once with President and Becky Jacobs, who are their aunt and uncle. We even got to meet Amanda’s mother, the woman who runs the domestic abuse shelter and for whom we did the service project at Christmas.  She was wonderful, and invited Sister Blanchard to go to lunch with her sometime!
That was a huge step!
We had another baptism today, an 8 year old child of the Chad and Heather Stokey family who are from the New Philadelphia Ward, that will now be attending our branch.  And how blessed we are to have them! A miracle happened today with little Lucas.  He was very sick and we were not sure if he would be able to be baptized, but he wanted to be baptized and we had all prayed that he would be well enough.  Last night he rallied and said that he would be baptized, and then he woke up with a low fever, but still was determined.  When they got to church today (he and his mom came late so he could rest) he was still sick, but was given a priesthood blessing by Elder Blanchard, who had a remarkable experience.  During the blessing, he felt impressed to bless him to be healed immediately and he did so.  The photos of him show how well he felt and what a miracle it was for him to remember on his baptismal date! It reminded us of our son Gregg who had had a very bad allergic reaction to something and his eyes were swollen shut the day before he was scheduled to be baptized, and because of a Priesthood blessing, was able to be baptized as scheduled!
We had a linger longer after church and fed about 45 people!  We do much less cooking than we used to (thankfully), because President Jacobs has now done away with all Linger Longers, except for special occasions, and this was a very special occasion.  Not only has the time we spent cooking gone down, but so has our grocery bill!  No complaints there!
We had a miracle happen today! We have several families and people that we are praying for and decided to have a branch presidency and missionary fast.  One of the people that we fasted for was Susan that she can have more learning opportunities, and help with overcoming some of her trials.  Well tonight she stopped by to pick up the plate of dinner that we made for her at the linger longer and she told us that just today, she looked at her schedule and one of her ladies that she gives care to was completely changed, and now she had Sundays free!  She can come to church!  She has never been able to do that until today.  And we told her that this was because of our fast!! Now we have to pray that she will sell her car so that she can catch up on her bills that she will have because of not having this client.
In our branch council, President Jacobs has helped us create a branch statement that we will add to the two standards of the stake.
So besides daily:
1-      Have meaningful prayer morning and night
2-      Read the Book of Mormon daily
We will add a third standard:
3-      Pray for, recognize and act on missionary opportunities!
This is what our branch needs to grow, it sounds wonderful!
We love our mission, in February, we will be half finished, and it is just flying by!  We love being able to serve as missionaries and pray that we can be and do what the Lord wants and needs here in Coshocton!
