We decided for our 40th
anniversary trip, we would take a trip to Kirtland.
Because of the passing of
Kim’s sweet mom and her traveling to Utah for the funeral, we bumped it until
the 7th of October.
And we could not
have picked a more beautiful day to go, a beautiful apple crisp fall day!
It is out of our mission boundaries, so we
let our mission president know and off we went!
We drove toward Clevland
and wanted to see New Philadelphia on our way, which was a delightful
community. Our next stop was Lake Erie
and we took a walk to a little marina and were overwhelmed by the size of the
lake.
We then drove to Kirtland
where we got our first peek of the temple.
It is beautiful! Since the Community of Christ church owns the temple,
we paid our fee and scheduled a tour.
Our guide was a great fellow named Don Brown and was staying in the area
to write music, but also was recruited to give tours.
We were joined by a group of young women,
seniors in high school, that were on a senior church history trip, so all of the
people in our groups were LDS.
He was very personable and
we loved all of the information that he shared with us! It was wonderful to
learn and see everything about the temple, but were saddened by the condition
that the temple is in because of lack of funding! Maybe someday they will sell it to the
church, but until then, they are working hard on the upkeep on a budget.
Highlights of our tour
were singing The Spirit of God like a Fire is Burning in the temple and it was
a powerful experience! Don asked Paul to
give a prayer, which was very tender and beautiful. After the tour Don asked us if we would like
to go into the basement and that was cool, only three of us went and he even
gave Kim a piece of the foundation of the temple! So cool!
After the temple tour, we
went to the LDS visitor’s center and saw the Newel K. Whitney Store and got to
see where the School of the Prophets was held and were the Savior had
appeared! So amazing! Our tour guides were
two adorable sister missionaries, and they did a wonderful job.
And the grounds and buildings were absolutely
clean and perfectly kept, so nice!
We didn’t have a lot of
time, so we saw everything there, and then took an amazing drive down to the
Johnson Farm where Joseph and Emma lived and the place where he was tarred and
feathered and one of the twins died because of exposure. Again a very sacred feeling there. Our tour guides there were a senior couple
and they did a wonderful job!
We then wanted to go to
dinner for an anniversary celebration and looked and looked and finally found a
place called Fritters, and had a simple dinner, but will take a look at
somewhere else where we can really call it a 40th wedding
anniversary celebration.
Not our favorite restaurant find, but everything else
about the day was absolutely amazing and wonderful!
The fall colors up north
were much brighter and more brilliant than the ones in Coshocton, so that was
extra fun!
A great day and a
wonderful 40th wedding anniversary celebration for us!
